Pipe Cooler

Pre-cooling milk with a pipe cooler
After milking, it is important to cool the milk as quickly as possible. To keep the milk fresh, it is cooled down to 4°C in a milk cooling tank. If the warm milk comes directly from the cow into the milk cooling tank, it takes a lot of energy to bring it to the desired temperature. To make this process more energy efficient, we recommend pre-cooling the milk with a pipe cooler.

Better milk quality and energy savings
A pipe cooler, also called a pipe heat exchanger, precools the milk before it enters the milk tank. This shortens the time for tank cooling and increases the efficiency of the milk tank. With the Mueller pipe cooler, the energy consumption of the milk cooling tank can be reduced by up to 50% and you save considerably on energy costs. Also, by cooling the milk more quickly, bacterial growth is reduced, giving you better milk quality.

How does a pipe cooler work?

Milk is pre-cooled according to the so-called counter-current principle. In the pipe cooler, the milk and cold spring water flow in separate channels and in opposite directions. A thin wall separates the milk and water from each other. At a ratio of two liters of water to one liter of milk, the milk is - generally speaking - pre-cooled to approximately 20°C. The milk tank then cools the milk further down to 4°C.
A single pipe cooler cools up to 4,000 liters per hour and a duo pipe cooler can cool up to 8,000 liters per hour.

Another pre-cooling option is the plate cooler. The choice of a pre-cooler type depends on the milk flow.
