How does a pre-cooler work?

Milk is pre-cooled according to the so-called counter-current principle. In this case, milk and water, in separate areas, flow in opposite directions. A thin wall separates the milk and water from each other. At a ratio of two liters of water to one liter of milk, the milk is generally pre-cooled to about 20° C. The cooling machine then cools the milk further down to 4° C. There are two two options for precooling milk on the farm: plate coolers and pipe coolers. These two options can be different in the material type, the surface finish and the turbulence that is created to promote heat transfer.
